Department of Natural Sciences

The mission of the Department of Natural Sciences at the College of Coastal Georgia is to foster the knowledge and ability to explore the complex and diverse natural world at all levels of organization and to promote the intellectual growth of the liberal arts student within the framework of the scientific perspective.

Specific goals include:

  • Encouraging active learning through laboratory experiments and outdoor field experiences that utilize and instill an appreciation for the unique coastal environmental resources
  • Providing opportunities to participate in scientific research, internships, and service within the local community
  • Developing critical thinking skills that facilitate independent thought and creative expression
  • Preparing students for careers in the natural sciences and for admission to graduate programs and professional schools.

The Department of Natural Sciences offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Biological Sciences and Environmental Science.

The Biology degree provides a broad foundation in Biology and underlying disciplines with a flexible curriculum that allows study to select among five concentrations, including Biochemistry, Biomedical Science, Coastal Ecology, Biology/Secondary Education, and General Biology. One of the unique aspects of this program is the abundance of opportunities for experiential learning in the form of internships and service learning projects with community partners, and undergraduate research with faculty mentors. Through these experiences, students apply and extend their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom to the research lab, the estuary, the clinic, or the K-12 classroom. Many students present their work at the annual Coastal Science Symposium, the Service Learning Symposium, SOURCE, or regional/national conferences.

The Environmental Science degree aims to provide a student-centered, experience-based education that empowers students to become lifelong learners and accomplished professionals. Environmental Science graduates are prepared to investigate, translate, and communicate Environmental Science in a way that promotes meaningful participation in civic and cultural affairs, as well as the global, technological society. The program offers two concentrations of study: Natural Science or Environmental Studies. Students will be immersed in interactive classroom and laboratory experiences as well as field experiences relating to their chosen track.
